In 1996, a deadly virus is unleashed by a group calling themselves the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, destroying much of the world’s population and forcing survivors underground. In 2035, prisoner James Cole (Bruce Willis, Die Hard) is chosen to go back in time and help scientists in their search for a cure.
Terry Gilliam has given us many of movies over the years that you can call are visually appealing. The van is a straight up visionary. Twelve Monkeys is a movie that takes a little of everything and tosses it into one. There are times when things feel very Brazil-like and other times when it feels very comedic. Still, everything in Twelve Monkeys comes together in an almost trippy fashion to give a movie that felt different at the time it was first released, but it also feels very different and fresh even today. It becomes a movie about time travel as well as doom and gloom, but it’s an appealing film not to just cult movie lovers like myself, but it reaches that barrier and crosses over to have a little something for everyone. Or at least it does if you can stomach the darker side of things that come with it.
One of the more appealing sides of Twelve Monkeys is the performances from both Brice Willis and Brad Pitt. Bruce plays the guy who is trying to go back and stop the world from becoming the doomed place that it ends up being in the future. Brad is playing the guy who is apparently trying to help but also coming across as extremely crazy. You could argue this was the prime time for both’s performances in great films that came out during this time and them being in stride really shines here. Toss in another great performance from Madeleine Stowe and the love and care that Arrow always gives releases and we have a great movie on a great release from Arrow Video that I think you’ll want to check out.
