Getting started with Kodi and PS4

Officially, Kodi team doesn’t provide any direct way of installing Kodi on PS4. So the only way is to sideload Kodi on PS4. Not just PS4, even for Firestick we need to follow a different method. Here is a guide to install Kodi on Firestick.

So-called Plex Method – The wrong way

If I am not wrong, you would have seen tons of sites explaining the traditional Plex method. Well, if you are baffled what is this plex method, then read this paragraph. Plex method is nothing but installing Plex on PS4, instead of installing Kodi on PS4. This method doesn’t actually install Kodi, instead, it installs Plex. Plex is a software that doesn’t support illegal streaming. And you can’t stream all the content for free on plex. So Plex can’t replace Kodi. And above all, Sony won’t support piracy by providing support to Kodi on PS4.
The main reason why you can’t install Kodi on PS4 directly is “PS4 is a console(device) and Kodi is a software“. Kodi is designed to run on an OS (Windows, Linux, Android). I hope you are getting my point. So you would need an OS installed on your PS4 to run Kodi on PS4.

The method which I am going to share is simple. First we will install an OS on PS4 and then install Kodi on that OS. By this way, we can use Kodi on PS4.

The ultimate method to install Kodi on PS4

    Warning for Kodi Users:

If you have planned to stream movies, web series, IPTV, Sports or other copyrighted content on Kodi, you are taking the risk. All your streaming activities are being monitored by the ISP. You could end up facing legal issues for streaming unauthorized content with Kodi. In order to get rid of such a headache just make use of a VPN to mask your online activities.

With that being said. we’ve found another method to install Kodi on PS4. The PS4 console doesn’t support “EXE file”. So you can’t install windows on your PS4. So we will be installing Linux (Ubuntu) followed by installing Kodi on the ubuntu. To install Ubuntu, you need to create a “standalone ubuntu USB”. In simple terms, you need to make a bootable Ubuntu USB, that is capable of running the OS on the pen drive. Don’t use Live USB. It will work but your files won’t be saved. So have to install add-ons each and every time. Follow the steps carefully, to create a fully functional Ubuntu USB.
For that, you need a 16GB flash drive, Ubuntu OS and Linux Boot Loader for PS4. Since we are going to run Ubuntu on PS4, you need the PS4 bootloader to detect the bootable device.

    • To do this, you need to install virtual box (A virtual machine software to run Ubuntu OS). Here we will be installing Ubuntu OS on a USB drive using the Virtual machine. By doing so, a complete Ubuntu OS will be installed in your USB drive.

Steps to create USB bootable Ubuntu

    1. Open virtual box software and select “New”
    2. Give any name for the virtual machine.
    3. Select the Type as “Linux” and version as “Ubuntu 64 bit”.
    4. Select next and allocate memory size for the virtual machine. (minimum 2GB) and Click Next.
    5. Select “do not add a virtual drive” in the next option. And select next.
    6. Since we are creating a VM(Virtual machine) without HDD, it will pop a warning message. Click Continue.
    7. Now the new Virtual Machine will be created. Now, navigate to Settings option.
    8. Select storage from the left side, click on “empty”. Now add ubuntu iso from the virtual optical disk file.
    9. Select the Ubuntu disk image.
    10. Now check the storage tree, you will find the iso name. And select USB from the left pane.
    11. Now add the storage location as USB drive by clicking on the add drive icon at the right side.
    12. Now “Start” the Virtual Machine. It will install all the files on the USB drive.
    13. Now ubuntu starts, follow the further steps to install Ubuntu on USB flash drive.
    14. Select install Ubuntu. Don’t give Try. (it will be installed as live OS)
    15. Now select continue.
    16. Since we will be creating multiple partitions, select something else. And select continue.
    17. On the next screen, check the device under “device for bootloader information”. And select continue.
    18. If it doesn’t show free space in the previous step, select “/dev/sda” and choose the new partition table. (you may have a different name).
    19. Now place the cursor on the free space label and click on “+” to create a new partition.
    20. Next step is you need to make the USB detectable by PS4. For that, you need to add the PS4 bootloader to the USB drive. The bootloader file size is around 20MB. So select the size as 20MB. And make the partition as primary, and file system as FAT32. Select mount point as windows, since we will be adding bootloader file from windows.
    21. Next, we need to create a partition to install Ubuntu. Keep the remaining as it is. Select the partition as primary and file system as the EXT2 file system. It doesn’t need any mount point, so select “/”. And select OK.
    22. Check whether there are two partitions. One to add bootloader via windows and others to install ubuntu. Place the cursor on the ubuntu partition and click install now.
    23. It will ask for the swap area, select continue.
    24. Since we are creating two partitions with a different file system. it is asking for confirmation. Select Continue.
    25. Now select your region.
    26. And select the language. And click continue.
    27. Enter the username and password. Make sure to select log in automatically.
    28. Now your Ubuntu will be installed. Wait till the installation completes.
    29. After installation, your screen will look something like this. Press Enter.
    30. Now the process is complete. shutdown the VM. Go to File > Close.
    31. Select Power off the virtual machine, and select Ok.
    32. Now your windows will automatically detect the 20MB partition. Which we created to add the bootloader.
    33. Open the drive and add the files. You can download the bootloader file from here.

Thus you have successfully made a standalone Ubuntu USB drive. Now insert the USB drive in your PS4. And follow the below steps.

Steps to install Ubuntu on PS4

    1. Insert the USB Drive, and navigate to settings.
    2. Now select user guide.
    3. Select PS4 WebKit playground. Its one of the toolkit to jailbreak/root PS4. Follow these steps to exploit or jailbreak your PS4.
    4. Select the Linux loader from the main window.
    5. Now you will see the Linux console. Sometimes you might directly get ubuntu screen. You need a USB keyboard for further steps.
    6. If you still are not having ubuntu screen, follow the below steps. Type “fdisk -l”. It will list the available partition.
    7. Now we are going to mount the Ubuntu partition to the main console. Type mount /dev/sdb2 newroot/ and select Enter.
    8. Now we will be switching the root. Type exec switch_root/newroot/ /newroot/sbin/init
    9. Now you will get the following message. Press “S”.
    10. Now the ubuntu will be loaded.

Thus you had successfully installed Ubuntu on your PS4. Now you can install Kodi on this ubuntu operating system and enjoy unlimited streaming.

Things needed to setup Raspberry Pi for Kodi v17.6

    2. The Flirc Raspberry Pi case

The Flirc Raspberry Pi case is not an essential need but it is a good thing to have if you plan on binge watching. The reason behind this recommendation is that a Flirc Raspberry Pi case comes with a built-in heat sink, which prevents the board from overheating.

Many users have reported overheating issues and this happens usually because when you are streaming for hours, the board’s performance is fully utilized. Overheating may cause many hardware issues and sometime it can result in a short circuit.

Another reason to opt for a Flicr case is that it gives a great look to your board because of its cool aluminum body. You can keep the board overlocked without worrying about the overheating issues and your board gets a great new look as well.

    3. Ethernet cable

A high-speed Ethernet cable is necessary to have, not just for connecting your device to the internet but for also having good bandwidth speed for uninterrupted streaming.

    4. HDMI cable

For connecting your Raspberry Pi device to your TV, you will need a HDMI cable. An HDMI cable works better than screen casting because of it does not provide a delayed visual.

    5. MicroSD memory card

An external storage is necessary for storing media files on Raspberry Pi. Many users opt for USB drives, which are not fast enough for pulling media files, and sometimes they slow down the system. Using a micro SD card is always a better option than a USB stick.

However, Raspberry Pi does not support every micro SD card. You might a micro SD card along with your Raspberry Pi in the package; check the card well because many a times these cards are of low quality.

You would see Samsung and Kingston cards coming in the packages with Raspberry Pi devices, which are not that efficient. It is better that you use SanDisk cards and that too should be at least 16 GB, to ensure smooth operating experience.

    6. Micro USB power adapter

Power adapters are not included in the package when you buy a Raspberry Pi board, which is why you have to buy them separately. Make sure you buy a high-quality power adapter supported by your device because sometimes there are packages offering a few low-grade power adapters along with the Raspberry Pi boards. Such boards do not last long and can damage your board in case of voltage fluctuations.
